My week in pictures: WEEK ENDING 5th October 2008

On the 1st of October I flew out to Morocco for a weeks holiday in Marrakech. I stayed at the Amine Hotel which was about 5km walk from the centre of town but had good basic rooms, a good sized swimming pool and a bar.

On the first day of my holiday I walked in to town and visited the Koutoubia Mosque, the Djemaa El-Fna (central Square) and some of the Souks. I then walked back to the hotel before beginning to work on my tan by the pool.

On the second day of my stay I walked in to the town and continued a complete circumnavigation of the old walled city - In total I walked 30km. I had a great time despite almost being arrested for trying to photograph the King's Palace entrance. I also visited the  Bahta and Badi Palaces as well as exploring the Jewish quarter.

My Third day involved early morning visits to the Ben Youssef Medersa and the Museum of Marrakesh. I found both buildings fascinating and was lucky to have the covered courtyard in the Museum all to myself.

On the fourth day my decisions were made by the roll of my trusty dice. I ended up donning my traditional Berber outfit which I had purchased the day before and marching into town before taking a ride by horse and carriage. I also enjoyed exploring more of the Souks and getting completely lost in the endless alleyways of the Medina.

My Fifth day involved walking into the town and visiting the Jardin Majorelle - the villa and gardens that was donated to the city by designer Yves Saint Laurent. I headed back into town in the evening to enjoy the chaos that descends on the Djemaa El-Fna during the evening.

I spent the final day having a wonderful time in the Souks bartering for gifts and souvenirs.

I flew out from Marrakesh airport first thing Wednesday morning.

I didn't really spend much time on photography this week - I only took my old camera and forgot to bring the tripod adaptor. It was difficult to photograph street scenes without having random people demanding money for inadvertently being in the photograph. For security reasons I didn't take my camera out in the evenings, which would have been an ideal time to get some great shots, especially around sunset.
