LANGDON WOOD AND GOLDEN CAP

At 191 metres Golden Cap is the highest point on the south coast and is most easily accessed from the car park at Langdon Wood.

INFORMATION

Langdon Wood and Golden Cap are both managed by the National Trust. Langdon Wood is easily accessed from the A35 between the villages of Chideock and Morcombelake. The wood is well sign posted from the main road. As always don't leave anything in your car that you don't want to be stolen.

From the Car park you basically follow the eastern and southern edges of the wood until you see the footpath sign for golden cap. You then need to follow the path out of the wood and walk in a south westerly direction through a couple of fields (please keep your dogs under close control as these fields often contain sheep) before reaching the bottom of golden cap. The well maintained path to the top of Golden cap zig-zags its way up and maybe slippery when wet. The top of Golden cap is marked by a triangulation point. It is worth taking a walk to the western end of Golden cap to view the Tumuli and sitting near to the edge for excellent views over Charmouth and down to Lyme Regis.

For a shorter walk you could just walk around the perimeter track that runs around Langdon wood.

THINGS TO DO

Golden Cap is a popular destination for picnics and Sunday afternoon strolls.

WILDLIFE

The resident wildlife includes Birds of Prey, Deer and plenty of rabbits.

GEOCACHING

There are Geocaches located at Langdon Wood and Golden Cap. You will need a GPS and to log on to the geocaching website for the clues and location.

PHOTOGRAPHY

You can get some great photographs in Langdon Wood of the  Bluebells in late April and Early May. Golden Cap boasts excellent views along the coast and you are often rewarded with mists in the morning and moody skies and beautiful sunsets in the evening.

OTHER PLACES TO VISIT NEAR BY

Langdon Wood and Golden Cap can also easily be accessed from Seatown or Chardown Hill or even Charmouth, all of which are popular in their own right. The towns of Charmouth and Bridport are only a short drive in either direction along the A35.
